Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) is a software tool that helps to scan resumes and select the most qualified candidates for a job opening. It scans spelling mistakes, the format of the data field, work experience, skills, name, previous employer, and skills that can be searched and filtered.

This is my old resume that I have scanned through ATS software in the Indeed platform.

content errors:

  • With the exception of listing your preferred pronouns near your name, write without using pronouns (I, me, we, she, her or he) that you normally include when speaking.

  • Include a job title for each work experience you list in the Experience section. If you need to create a job title, clearly identify the type of work or responsibilities you had.

  • Employers usually expect to find the company or employer names for your previous jobs in your resume. You may want to list all of the companies you have worked for, or say something like "Multiple Companies." If you were self-employed, consider including more details (things like Contract, Multiple Contracts, Consulting, Independent Contractor).

In this article, I will figure out all the mistakes that you should remember & improve your resume and you will get higher chances of shortlisting your resume.

Mistake #1: Make the same resume & apply for every job role:

Most of the freshers make the same mistake every time. They make resumes & add specific tech & skills to them and apply them to different roles.

ex. If you have skills in web technologies like CSS, javascript and React then most of the chances you will get selected for a web developer role. But If you apply this resume for different roles like Android dev, machine learning, or cloud then you will be ignored. It doesn't matter how you are smart & talented in this field. recruiter just picks up candidates according to their requirements.

My personal recommendation in this case is to:

  1. Check the job description before applying. Figure out what skill sets you have and how your skill sets match up with the position & apply according to them.

  2. Ask a senior or friend to review your resume with you and see where the gaps are.

If you don't have friends, then DM me here. I can't promise to find a friend for you but definitely can help you review your resume.

Mistake #2: Adding Unnecessary Information

Your resume should focus on your professional qualifications, not personal details. Avoid including information like age, marital status, or social security number.

If you are applying for a Machine Learning Engineer position, you don’t have to put many projects related to Front-end applications, Operating systems, or Computer Networks.

Mistake #3: Grammatical Errors

Grammatical and spelling mistakes in a resume can make you look unprofessional and careless, and can even lead to your resume being rejected.

You should check your resume before applying. Check spelling errors, Incorrect punctuation, and Grammar errors.

Mistake #4: Unprofessional Filename or Email Address

Most of the candidates save resume pdf by another name or just by name "resume". and also save by their name with a date but this causes a wrong impression on the candidate profile. You can use an underline between the name & resume words.

Ex. "Firstname_LastName_resume" or “Resume_Your_Name”

Also, you should use a working mail address in which having your name. Write a professional email address that relates to your name, such as ".

Mistake #5: Lack of Keywords:

Keywords and phrases are extremely important in today's job application process, especially given the prominence of Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) utilized by many businesses. These systems scan resumes electronically, looking for keywords and phrases relevant to the position.

You should add 475-600 words to your resume. Try to include more details about your skills, qualifications, and work experience. Employers like to know more about how you contributed and what you accomplished in your previous roles.

Mistake #6: Format mistake

Most of the fresheners use columns while making resumes also use different fonts and colors that why the resume is not even selected for the job role.

You should focus on a good format. Make the format as simple as possible. Don't add too much creativity to the resume.
